more mold suits filed against school board 12-12-2003 BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Alleged toxic mold in two elementary schools has led to 14 more lawsuits against the Broward County School Board and some of its builders. The suits, filed Thursday on behalf of 17 plaintiffs, claim that the students at Indian Trace Elementary in Weston and Riverside Elementary in Coral Springs suffer from respiratory problems and other health effects because of mold. The suits allege negligent design and construction. In September, 20 other similar suits were filed. Last spring, a grand jury issued report that criticized the school district for being too slow and ineffective in its efforts to eradicate mold. Even though the school district then instituted an indoor air quality program designed by the Environmental Protection Agency, it did not stop the lawsuits that say the school district knew that the mold endangered the health of students and employees and did not do enough to protect them. In the meantime, Sen. Skip Campbell of Coral Springs has introduced a bill to make Broward's air quality program mandatory statewide. |
