Update on the mold issues at Glenallen Elementary School

After Tuesday's article "Glenallen Elementary 'is making us sick,' says parent" appeared, two people mentioned in the story called the Sun to clarify information obtained from public records. Both Elizabeth Galterio and unnamed Before and After School director said that while they did file an "Indoor Air Quality Report Form" respectively with the School Board of Sarasota County, Florida, that the Sun story did not explain results of the subsequent investigations.

Glenallen Health Room Aide Elizabeth Galterio originally filed an "Indoor Air Quality Report Form" with the School Board of Sarasota County, Florida, Nov. 21, 2002. The report stated, "I have worked in this room for the past seven years. Since the beginning of this school year (02-03) I have experienced stuffy head, sneezing, intense headaches, tight chest when I am in my room. When I am home I do not have this problem. When I get home after work the symptoms start to go away and by the morning I feel better only to have the problem start over after being in my room a short time. I have no problem on weekends. Ms. Richenbach, who works in the Health Room part of the day also has similar problems."

Galterio said that after filing the report, the air-conditioning ducts were cleaned and she and another worker have had no problems since. Galterio also emphasized that in her daily duties as a Health Room Aide at Glenallen, she has not noticed any reoccurring problems with the students she sees there.

The Before and After School director said that while she did file an "Indoor Air Quality Report Form" with the School Board of Sarasota County, Florida, her health concerns were not related to air quality.

Update on Hannah Bulicsek
Four days after being moved from Glenallen Elementary School Portable 19, Hannah Bulicsek, 7, has experienced no headaches. Her mother, Tami Bulicsek said Hannah's headaches have stopped, but that the school should look beyond air quality and examine everything in Portable 19 with a "fine-toothed comb."

"I am glad she (Hannah) is doing better, but I think a thorough check should be done on the portable," Bulicsek said. "They should do a complete rundown on everything: carpet, insulation, inside the walls -- not just air quality."
