Mold is everywhere. It's in every home, and in every yard. And living
in Florida, where moisture and humidity run wild, mold and mildew have
become an issue.
Mold spores continually drift in and out of homes and other
environments, and sometimes can remain there for years. Alachua County
Director of Environmental Health Paul Meyers says there are a number
of ways to prevent mold from growing, mainly through controlling the
relative humidity in your home.
The accumulation of mold can cause illness, from minor problems of eye
irritations, nasal stuffiness, and wheezing. Meyers says some people
may have more severe reactions.
Meyers adds that if you have a problem with mold in your home, it is
probably due to an excessive amount of moisture. He says to take care
of the sources of moisture, such as your air conditioning system or
leaky pipes, and if problems persist, contact a professional.
