Child Support Services contracts approved

The county Board of Supervisors this week approved two contracts for engineering work on a building at 321 San Felipe Road where Child Support Services operations will permanently move.

The 25-employee department transferred in late February from its former location at 220 San Felipe Road to a temporary home on Technology Parkway. Mold infestation at 220 San Felipe Road allegedly caused an array of health problems during a two-year stretch before they left.

State sees increase in toxic mold cases

When Michael Rowzee was called to clean an Orem home this week, he found about 30 square feet of greenish-black toxic mold caked in its basement walls that could have been there for at least a year.

Commonly known as Stachybotrys chartarum -- a greenish-black fungus usually found on materials that are chronically moist or damaged by leaks or flooding -- the mold was able to grow on the walls of the basement laundry room because of a bathroom leak, said Rowzee, owner of Certified Decontamination, a Salt Lake City-based mold clean-up company.

Lakeview Nursing Home

A sick building gets a death sentence.

The city of Terre Haute decided Wednesday afternoon that the empty Lakeview Nursing Home should be torn down.

You may recall in May of 2002, the nursing home had to evacuate residents when flood waters rolled into the building.

Mold discovery leads Carroll to check classrooms: Fungi growth didn't pose health risk, inspector says

A week after emptying four portable classrooms at Mount Airy Middle School for fear that mold might be making teachers and children sick, Carroll County school officials announced yesterday that they will begin inspecting all 119 of the school system's relocateable classrooms for signs of similar water damage.

"Having in hand the knowledge of what's behind those walls and above those ceilings in units of this vintage, we're going to be looking at these classrooms with a critical eye - a more informed eye - based on what we found at Mount Airy," Raymond Prokop, the school system's facilities director, said in an interview yesterday afternoon after a meeting between the school board and county commissioners.

SIUE officials seek to break the mold

EDWARDSVILLE -- More than enrollment is growing at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Mold driven by humidity and condensation problems has plagued both Woodland and Prairie halls for years, causing soggy drywall and mold growth in some of the residence hall rooms. Michael Schultz, director of university housing, said the worst places are on the first floors of both Woodland and Prairie halls, although the newest residence hall, Bluff Hall, also has some moisture problems.

Woodland Hall was built in 1994, Prairie Hall in 1998 and Bluff Hall in 2001.

Attack of the Black Mold: Pepperell family told to leave home infested with mold

On Oct. 31, 2002, Nancy and Rick Davis bought their first home at 20A Shawnee Road. The couple had been living in a rented townhouse in Stow when they decided it was time to own a place of their own. Less than two months after moving in, the Davises would learn that their new home was so infested with mold that inspectors and doctors recommended they leave the house immediately to avoid serious health risks.

"If you had a lemon car, there are laws to protect you. There are no laws for houses," she said. "If we found (the mold) in 45 days, why can't we just return it."

Mold Problems Show Up At Bunn High School: Mold Forces Temporary Closure Of Science Building

FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. -- The state health department sent a letter home to parents at a Franklin County High School telling them about a problem with mold.

Inspectors recently found some potentially toxic mold at Bunn High School. They said it was growing around the insulation on some of the pipes in the ceiling of the science building.

County director of environmental health offers advice on mold

Mold is everywhere. It's in every home, and in every yard. And living in Florida, where moisture and humidity run wild, mold and mildew have become an issue.

Mold spores continually drift in and out of homes and other environments, and sometimes can remain there for years. Alachua County Director of Environmental Health Paul Meyers says there are a number of ways to prevent mold from growing, mainly through controlling the relative humidity in your home.

Trying to catch her breath: Amity student speaks out about bad air

Ona-May Slauson arrived last Monday at Bethany Junior High School to find her daughter Cassandra gasping for breath in the back of an ambulance before it headed to Yale New Haven hospital.

"It was like a scene in a horror movie," said Slauson, "except my daughter was coming out of school."

Fungus forces pupils to relocate: Middle school closes trailer to assess air quality; Kids, teacher complain of illness

Concerned that moldy carpets, water-damaged windowsills and a musty odor might be making teachers and children sick, Carroll County school officials emptied four portable classrooms yesterday at Mount Airy Middle School and said they will squeeze displaced pupils into the crowded main building until damage is repaired.

An air quality technician who inspected a trailer containing the four classrooms Tuesday afternoon took several test samples - the results of which won't be ready for three to four weeks - but recommended that the school not use the portables, which have been in use for at least 22 years.

Canaries sing victory tune

Nothing is more important to Bill Sozanski than protecting his children - not even his job. An accountant in Fairfield County, Sozanski said he was laid off in part because of all the time he and his wife Judy spent during the last year fighting the problem of hazardous mold in public schools on behalf of his daughter April, 11, and son Will, 8.

The Sozanskis weren't alone in their fight. They and dozens of other parents formed the Canary Committee to bring attention to the issue and to lobby Hartford for a solution. Their children, known as the Canary Kids, appeared before the General Assembly last March to plead with lawmakers to take action.

Mold in dorms prompts relocation

KENT, Ohio -- Sixteen Kent State University students living on the first floor of Engleman Hall had to relocate to the Allerton apartments because of a black mold that had been growing on the first floor after heavy rains during the summer.

The students had to move because of health risks and so the university could fix the problem, said Ron Kirksey, director of university communications.

Woman, daughter forced out of condo due to mold

This was the dream house Brandy Dignall always wanted.

It was by no means luxurious, and that was all right with Dignall. She wanted a good school district for her 9-year-old daughter, a friendly town, and a quiet place surrounded only by swaying trees.

But she hasn't lived there since January.

Molds can be problematic in homes during winter

After the fall, Alaskans move indoors for the long winter. Doors and windows are weather stripped to try and make the house as tight as possible. Houses are closed up to help keep heating bills down. In this environment, mold and mildew can develop.

Many individuals do not know that the home can be an excellent breeding ground for mold. Actually, about 40 percent of homes have mold growth. The cause is excess moisture. You might think homes in Alaska are dry. But the typical home has many sources of moisture that can cause problems.
