Infestation Hits Rockland Rockland, Ma. - Following the raising of an Abington home due to hazardous mold spores, the Rockland Board of Health has determined 66 Church Street to be “unfit for human habitation.” Three families currently living in the apartment complex, owned and not maintained by an absentee landlord, were making complaints in an effort to improve their living conditions. Unfortunately, that is not the way things played out. After several requests to the landlord were ignored, tenants asked officials to survey what they considered to be “substandard living.” Officials agreed that it was substandard and had the complex condemned. The tenants are doubly outraged now. They tried to do everything they knew to get the landlord to take responsibility. Now, they are being forced to move of their home. They feel that they are paying the price for his lack of responsibility. James Kennedy, owner of the apartment complex, was not available for comment. However, sources reveal that Mr. Kennedy places blame on the tenants. Apparently, Mr. Kennedy did not maintain the building because several tenants were regularly late on rent. When repairs were made, Mr. Kennedy reports that tenants ruined it. One tenant blames mold found under her refrigerator and mushrooms growing on the walls for her children's bronchitis. Another woman reported blames recently diagnosed emphysema on the filthy living conditions. When asked why they chose to remain in this filth, tenants reported that sky rocketing rents made it impossible for them to relocate. Sky rocketing rent or not, the tenants of 66 Church Street are ordered to be out the house by Oct 1. |
