Growing Concern in SIUE Dorm Building Mold is growing out of control at two of the newest dormitories at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Some students say they were never warned about the problem and say the mold is making them sick. University officials don't deny a mold problem exists in two dorms but they say they are doing everything possible to resolve the situation. One of the dormitories involved is SIUE's Woodland Hall. The dorm is home to more than 500 students and a growing population of mold. The black stuff is in ceilings, growing on doors and on students' walls. Student Jonathan Priepot says he recently found out about the mold growing in his room after he noticed spots on the wall. Priepot says while he grew concerned, no university officials acknowledged a mold problem. Michael Schultz, the Director of University Housing admits students were told about the mold just recently. Schultz does say the university has been trying desperately to get rid of it for awhile. He says tests confirmed mold in the building and now the university is trying to find a long term solution to the dorms moisture problem. High humidity in the buildings are said to be the source of the problems. In the meantime, SIUE officials have hired an industrial hygienist to help solve the problem temporarily. Some of things the university is already doing includes cleaning or removing carpet and drywall. University officials say they have identified several different species of mold but say they are not a health risk. The school has also filed a lawsuit against the contractors that built the two mold infested dorms. |
