Schools
that have had problems with mold Here's a look at mold problems in other local school systems over the past 10 years: Norfolk: A mold infestation at Tarrallton Elementary School sparked health complaints, a six-week closure of the school library and improvements to the air-conditioning system in 1994 and 1995. The old W.H. Taylor Elementary School, replaced in 1999, was plagued by leaks and mold problems. Virginia Beach: Eight schools -- Salem High and Salem Middle, and Birdneck, Glenwood, Red Mill, Ocean Lakes, and Rosemont and Strawbridge elementary schools -- were diagnosed as ``sick buildings'' in 1995. Their ventilation systems were renovated to provide improved humidity control. Between 1995 and 2000, the city spent $13 million on school air-quality improvements. Portsmouth: Air-quality problems attributed to poor ventilation and humidity control prompted $2 million in renovations to Churchland High School's air-handling system between 1997 and 1999. Currituck County, N.C.: A mold infestation occurred during construction of Currituck County High School and had to be cleaned up before the school opened in 1998. Another mold outbreak at Griggs Elementary School in 2000 prompted $1.4 million in renovations. Chesapeake: Mold problems at three intermediate schools -- Butts Road, Greenbrier and Great Bridge -- led to a $1.8 million upgrading of their ventilation systems in 2000. Elizabeth City, N.C.: Moisture-saturated walls have been blamed for a constant mold problem at Elizabeth City Middle School. There are plans to replace it with a new school. |
