FORT LAUDERDALE – Lawsuits have been filed against the Broward School Board and builders over alleged toxic mold and its effects over the past 14 years at two elementary schools in Broward County.

High school library closed because of mold

HIGHTSTOWN — Hightstown High School students will have to find another place to work on those research papers, as the school's library has been closed since the beginning of the semester due to an infestation of mold.

Mold spells trouble for school systems

It's fuzzy. It's slimy. It devours the surfaces it grows on. And it reproduces exponentially by sending out microscopic spores that can waft their way into human lungs, causing asthma and other respiratory ailments.

Schools that have had problems with mold

Here's a look at mold problems in other local school systems over the past 10 years:

Norfolk: A mold infestation at Tarrallton Elementary School sparked health complaints, a six-week closure of the school library and improvements to the air-conditioning system in 1994 and 1995. The old W.H. Taylor Elementary School, replaced in 1999, was plagued by leaks and mold problems.

Schools throughout New England battle mold

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- It's popped up in carpeting, crawled over ceiling tiles and slimed books and bulletin boards in schools from Maine to Rhode Island.

"Mold growth has been at a rate that we have never seen in history," said Suzanne Condon, assistant commissioner for environmental health for the Massachusetts health department.

Student, staff lawsuits target mold in schools

After years of watching her son suffer from severe symptoms -- vomiting in class and at home, having to endure 78 allergy injections, 22 prescribed medications, CAT scans and two surgeries to drain his sinuses -- Cara Aliseo finally pulled him out of his mold-plagued elementary school.

He's been healthy ever since, she said. On Friday, Aliseo spoke out about the mold problems as one of 18 parties to file lawsuits against the Broward County School District.
Filed on behalf of 13 students and seven employees, the lawsuits allege Riverside and Indian Trace elementary schools were more than just petri dishes for the "black snow" and sludge that grew inside walls and blew through the air conditioning systems.

The 'slow fire' of toxic mold: Family's home life destroyed

New Paltz – The house at 166 Plains Road is no longer a home – it's a tomb.

When Teri and Jeff Chandler bought the handsome '60s-era Cape Cod four years ago, they never dreamed they were embarking on a nightmare from which there's been no awakening.

That was before a bloom of invisible toxins robbed them of the life they used to live.

It began innocently enough two years ago, when the Chandlers hired a contractor to renovate their outdated bathroom.

Mold Infestation Hits Rockland

Rockland, Ma. - Following the raising of an Abington home due to hazardous mold spores, the Rockland Board of Health has determined 66 Church Street to be “unfit for human habitation.”

Three families currently living in the apartment complex, owned and not maintained by an absentee landlord, were making complaints in an effort to improve their living conditions. Unfortunately, that is not the way things played out. After several requests to the landlord were ignored, tenants asked officials to survey what they considered to be “substandard living.” Officials agreed that it was substandard and had the complex condemned.

Mold concerns raised at school

As Moon Area school officials complete mold- and moisture-related repairs at the district's senior high school, new concerns are being raised about what some think looks like mold in part of Bethel Park High School.

Condensation from an air conditioning system backed up into the Moon Area library earlier this month, damaging 347 books beyond repair. Another 1,500 books have been sent to a restoration company for dehumidification.

Home, sweet . . . mold: Spores can be a home torment

Toxic mold. Ed McMahon claimed it made his family ill and caused his sheepdog to develop respiratory problems and die after the den of his Beverly Hills, Calif., mansion flooded.

Kerry and Rachelle Sherman, of St. George, say they lived with toxic mold in their rental home for a year until their two daughters' continued health problems, which they blame on the mold, forced them out.

Housing's war on mold continues

Student housing units Delta one, two, three and four are being treated for mold and mildew problems.

Mold and mildew come from moisture resulting from humidity. The South is more prone to this problem because it is near water. Mold and mildew are at peak growth during the summer.

Dr. Dale Adams, vice president of student affairs, said, "mold and mildew in Mobile is synonymous."

Mold-related claims on the decline, but problems remain

BOSTON (AP) -- She has always loved her grand old Victorian home. But that may change.

For weeks, she has suffered unbearable headaches that she thinks may be caused by mold -- and now she's on the verge of spending thousands to fix the problem.

"I can't live in this house with this headache," said the 55-year-old woman who did not want her name or the Boston suburb where she lives disclosed for fear the value of her home would suffer.

She's not alone in her worries.

mold a Growing Concern in SIUE Dorm Building

Mold is growing out of control at two of the newest dormitories at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Some students say they were never warned about the problem and say the mold is making them sick.

University officials don't deny a mold problem exists in two dorms but they say they are doing everything possible to resolve the situation.
